The founders of Sosabe Cellars have a long lineage in the Napa Valley, dating back to the 1930’s, when their grandfather and brother immigrated from Cape Verde Islands, a former Portuguese territory, located just off the West Coast of Africa, and settled in California, United States.
1968, our father Juvenal , followed suit and came to California, settling in the town of Saint Helena in the heart of the Napa Valley. The following year, he found employment working for a renowned winery where he worked until his retirement in 1992. In 1974, Juvenal’s family, which included his wife Maria and their 6 children, joined him. The couple’s youngest daughter would be born later in the United States.
Juvenal’s eldest son, Nuias, and founder of Sosabe Cellars, started working part time in the vineyards his first year after arriving while also attending school full time. After graduating high school, Nuias found employment with an up and coming winery. There, he had the opportunity to work side by side with the owners and learned all aspects of wine making and eventually rose to the rank of Cellar Master. During this time, he also continued his education at Napa Valley College, studying business. However, as time went on he realized his passion was in wine making.
Meanwhile, his brother, Sabino, younger by 7 years, went into the military duty soon after high school and served for 10 years between full time and reserve. Sabino later joined his brother in the wine industry and it’s this experience gained that triggered their interest to invest in not only a vineyard land but also start their own label, which is today known as Sosabe Cellars.
Today, Sosabe wines are sold in the states of California, Massachusetts, Rhode Islands, and Florida. Sosabe wines have also been distributed in New York and as far away as Japan, and Ontario, Canada. Pronounced (Soh-saa-bee), which means fun in the Cape Verdean language, Sosabe is the essence and inspiration of our wines. Well balanced with flavors, smoothness and complexities, enjoyable for all occasions.
